After having to settle with a silver medal, second to Max Hoff, yesterday in the 1000 meters race, Sunday was the day when René Holten Poulsen could celebrate winning the gold medal in the 500 meters race leaving the German in second place.

The Dane is the reigning World and European champion on the 500 meters distance and on home ground on Bagsvaerd Lake, he was eager to win the World Cup gold medal.

Holten Poulsen took the lead from the beginning and on the first 300 meters only his club mate Orion Pilo, reigning European U-23 champion, could follow his speed. The high speed was too much for Pilo and he had to let go with 200 meters left of the race. On the other hand, Max Hoff set in his famous sprint. But Holten Poulsen held the lead all the way while Pilo came in as an acceptable number five.

Right after this, the Danish women’s K4, crewed with Henriette Engel Hansen, 361, Emma Aastrand Jørgensen, Maribo, Ida Villumsen, 361 and Amalie Thomsen, Limfjorden, was in the 500 meter final. They were hoping for a medal, but in a close race the Danish women had to settle with crossing the finish line as number four after Germany, Russia and China.
